Stephanie Charter grew up in a large family in the Mid-West. Her parents divorced when she was in middle school. She attended Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Nebraska where she was a member of the International Moot Court Board and earned a highest grade award in Advanced Constitutional Law. She started her career as an attorney in civil litigation in Orange County, California, in 1991 and then continued in civil litigation in Las Vegas, Nevada, after moving here in 1994. She was offered and accepted a position as a staff attorney. While with CAP, she founded the Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Counsel for Children. She also helped with a collaborative effort to decrease the population of infants and toddlers in congregate care in Clark County. She gained additional child welfare experience when she joined the District Attorney’s office in Clark County and then in Washoe County as an agency attorney and prosecutor in child welfare cases. She worked as a family law practitioner with a law firm based in St. George, Utah. While in St. George, she served as a board member of the Dove Center Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence and as a volunteer with the Erin Kimball Foundation for victims of domestic violence. She has been a long-time volunteer judge with the Truancy Diversion Program in Clark County. She was the co-founder of the Truancy Diversion Program in Washoe County and served as the Chairperson for the Student Attendance Advisory Board. Her husband, R. Scott Weide, and she have been married for 27 years. They have three children as well as a menagerie of ever-increasing pets including rescue whippets, a rescue greyhound, a desert tortoise, and two horses.
