Mary Kay Holthus was born in Syracuse, New York in 1961. She grew up in upstate New York and attended State University of New York at Binghamton. She worked as a summer law clerk at Rawlings, Olson & Cannon in Las Vegas, where she concentrated on insurance defense issues. She put herself through college and law school, waiting tables and tending bar. In 1989, she moved to Las Vegas with her mother and her sister. She passed the bar exam in 1989, and began work as an associate at Jones, Jones, Close & Brown. During her time as an associate, she worked on a variety of civil law issues. In March, 1991, she began her career with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, where she remains today, as a chief deputy District Attorney. As a Deputy District Attorney, she prosecutes all types of misdemeanors and felonies. She has handled thousands of cases. She conducted her first jury trial in 1991. Since that time, she has done approximately 150 felony jury trials, as well as numerous misdemeanor bench trials. After several years of general litigation, she joined the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit. For 16 years, she sought justice for victims of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence. In 1994, she married Brian Holthus, who is a partner at Jolley Urga Woodbury Holthus & Rose. They have two children at Grand Canyon University who aspire to return to Las Vegas after graduation and one child at Faith Lutheran High School, who aspires to become a theater legend. She has spent nearly 30 years seeking justice for the residents of Clark County, Nevada.
