Nadia Wood is a Chief Deputy Public Defender and an adjunct professor at Nevada State College. Prior to becoming a lawyer, she attended the University of California at Berkeley, where she was an Alumni Leadership Scholar. She graduated at the age of 19 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and then moved to Washington DC to attend law school at Georgetown University Law Center. While in law school, she worked at the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, representing individuals fleeing persecution who were seeking asylum here in the United States. She represented individuals fleeing horrors such as genocide, forced marriage, female circumcision, and rape. She was also Vice President of the Student Bar Association and Lieutenant Governor for the 11th Circuit of the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association. Nadia earned her law degree at the age of 22 and then moved to Las Vegas in 2011 to work at the public defender’s office. She chose Las Vegas as her home. She met my husband, bought a house, and has formed lasting friendships. Nadia has represented over 2,000 clients and tried approximately 20 felony jury trials, including murder, attempted murder, first degree kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault cases. She has conducted well over 150 preliminary hearings in the justice court, in addition to dozens of misdemeanor bench trials. She has represented individuals in over 1,500 sentencing arguments in the justice and district courts. She has dedicated her career to serving her community and making sure everyone is heard when they have their day in court. She was the trial attorney in Morgan v. State, which was the first case in Nevada extending equal protection rights for jury service to LGBTQ+ individuals and Mungai v. State, where she became the first attorney in Clark County to successfully show in a hearing before the district court that underrepresentation of minorities on the juror pool list has been systemic. In addition to working as a public defender, Nadia is also an adjunct professor at Nevada State College, where she teaches two criminal justice courses. In her Criminal Law and Procedure course, she teaches students the fundamentals of criminal law, including how to read a statute, how to read a case, and leading cases on the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments. In her Law and Society Course, she teaches students the underlying principles of law and how our laws shape our country. Outside of my work, she spends time volunteering and working with several community organizations. She currently serve on the State Bar’s Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics. She is also a guest lecturer every semester at UNLV Boyd Law for a Trial Advocacy class, teaching cross examination. She has also coached for Boyd’s mock trial teams for the Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition. Additionally, she volunteers through Legal Aid of Southern Nevada to represent abused and neglected children in Family Court.
