Mark B. Bailus is a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended Valley High School in Las Vegas and studied Political Science in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He went on to study law at Pepperdine University School of Law. In 1979, he returned to Las Vegas where he currently resides with his wife of 33 years, Stephanie Bailus. They have two adult children. Their daughter, Brittni Bailus, is an attorney at law in Las Vegas while their son, Blake Bailus, is attending Columbia University School of Law. Initially, he was an associate for Michael A. Cherry in the law firm of Manos & Cherry, Ltd. from 1980 to 1987. Thereafter, he was a sole practitioner from 1987 to 1990. In January, 1991, he and Mr. Cherry formed the law firm of Cherry & Bailus. In January, 1993, George P. Kelesis joined the firm of Cherry & Bailus to form Cherry, Bailus & Kelesis. He was a partner in the law firm of Cherry & Bailus from 1991 through 1992 and then later a partner in Cherry, Bailus & Kelesis from 1993 to 1997. He practiced primarily in the areas of personal injury, family law, probate, gaming, bankruptcy and administrative law, civil and criminal litigation and appeals (state and federal). He, along with Mr. Cherry, were lead counsel for the personal injury plaintiffs in the mass tort litigation known as the "Pepcon Explosion Litigation" resulting in a multi-million dollar settlement for the plaintiffs. In June, 1997, he accepted a position as a Deputy for the Clark County Special Public Defender's Office. Under Nevada Supreme Court Rule 250, he readily qualified for representation of defendants in capital murder cases. As an experienced litigator and appellate practitioner, he was responsible for all appeals of capital murder cases to the Nevada Supreme Court as well as maintaining a criminal trial practice while at the Special Public Defender's Office. Then in November, 1998, he left the employment of the Clark County Special Public Defenders Office and accepted a position as Associate General Counsel, and was later General Counsel, for Nevada Beverage Company, an Anhauser-Busch wholesalership. He practiced primarily in the areas of corporate, business, commercial, administrative and employment law as well as civil litigation. He left his former employment in July, 2004, and with Mr. Kelesis, formed the law firm of Bailus Kelesis, Ltd. In August, 2005, Bailus Kelesis, Ltd. merged with the law firm of Marc P. Cook & Associates, to form Bailus Cook & Kelesis, Ltd. Although the firm maintained a general law practice with emphasis on taxation and commercial litigation, business, corporate, criminal tax law and "white collar" crimes, He practiced primarily in the areas of complex civil and criminal litigation and appeals (state and federal). While at Bailus Cook & Kelesis, he was appointed by the Clark County Commissioners to the Ombudsperson Panel to represent the deceased family and public at the Police Fatality Public Fact-Finding Review hearings. He was admitted to practice in all Courts for the State of Nevada in 1980; in the United States District Court, District of Nevada in 1980; United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit in 1982; United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit in 1991; and the United States Supreme Court in 1985. His professional affiliations have included the State Bar of Nevada; American Bar Association; Clark County Bar Association; Association of Trial Lawyers of America; Nevada Justice Association; Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice; and Association of Corporate Counsel. He also was a panel member of the Southern Nevada Disciplinary Board for the State Bar of Nevada.
